BEYOND BORDERS

Saturday 28th April 2012 - Imperial College London

Registration 8.45am - 9.45am

First Theatre Session 9.50am

Finish 5.30pm (estimated)

Spring is just around the corner and the sap is rising; no better time for some fresh thinking about plants and planting design.

Beyond Borders will inspire and seek answers to key questions such as is there anything new in planting design? And where is planting going? 'New' approaches have moved us beyond the constraints of traditional, height graduated borders - taller plants have been liberated from their backstop role at the rear. But if classic borders have been replaced by a host of options - matrix, prairie-style, steppe included - even these are now old hat.

Plants perform varied functions in design and there are many different routes for designers to achieve broadly similar goals. For some, the new mixed border revisits the role shrubs can play in pursuit of the Holy Grail of modern planting; year round colour, low maintenance/easy care. For others, planting is now a case of creating sustainable ecologies, pseudo-naturalistic in style.

With an illustrious panel of speakers, Beyond Borders promises to be an engaging mixture of inspiration and enlightenment.

Confirmed speakers include Raymond Jungles, Miami based landscape architect, back by popular demand having been unable to reach England because of the ash cloud in spring 2010, Tom Stuart Smith MSGD, whose planting is inspired by natural and semi-natural plant communities, Christopher Woodward, Director of the Garden Museum, London and James Hitchmough, Professor of Horticultural Ecology at the University of Sheffield. Cleve West MSGD will chair the day.
