Overview:

For this CPD-Digital event we will look at the journey of water through the garden, how to enhance our interactions, reduce external (mains water) inputs, manage and harvest excess water.  We will also focus on how to integrate ornamental design with functional aspects of water management.  Water is a fantastic element and brings life and fun to a garden!

We will cover:

  • The journey of water, the garden as a point of interception within the hydrological cycle
  • Too much or too little, adapting the garden to cope with circumstance
  • External inputs and outputs – mains water supply and drainage, roofs, surface runoff, water-tables
  • Rain gardens, SUDS, WSUDS – definitions
  • Design considerations and goals
  • Site assessment – topography, soil type, exposure, location
  • Client ambition, managing expectations
  • Design criteria:
    • Regulations and permissions
    • Volume and flow – what you need and what you don’t need to know
    • Water catchment and flooded flow routes
    • Permeable surfaces
    • Rainwater harvesting
    • Incorporating ornamental streams and ponds into the design
    • Biological filtration systems
  • Planting for rain gardens
  • Maintenance of rain gardens
