Walls - retaining
Overview:
Walls can be either freestanding or retaining, where they act as a structural transition between levels and interruptions within established gradients. A wall can comprise of a wide variety of materials and therefore construction techniques. Both traditional (concrete foundations with small masonry units) and alternative approaches need to address the impact of impeding water flow, structural requirements, suitability for the proposed level of exposure and the design criteria. This webinar will address the fundamentals of specifying a retaining wall, the flexibility and limitations of different approaches and the common details and problems encountered. A retaining wall typically has single fair face; this has an impact on the type of materials used and opens up a range of alternative techniques to support a level change
- Site assessment and what you need to determine.
- Techniques for dealing with water tables and difficult soils
- Alternative materials and techniques for retaining soil: Steel, mass gravity systems, cement free construction
- Soil slopes (when is a wall required?)
- Drainage techniques
- Liabilities
