Nigel Philips FSGD

Nigel Philips trained at Merrist Wood College and has been a practicing garden designer since 1981. In that time, he has run his own design and build company and carried out a wide variety of design commissions, including exhibition gardens at local and national shows and winning awards at the Chelsea Flower Show.

His ethos is to seek inspiration from the site, however large or small, with the architecture, whether existing or proposed, and organise the space according to its owners use. Form must follow function with aesthetics and plant decoration overlaying the structure.

He has lectured in related subjects for the Royal Horticultural Society and has been involved with running various courses on garden design for the last twenty five years, both at Plumpton College and other educational establishments. He wrote and delivered The Professional Diploma in garden design and helped establish the Foundation Degree Course.

His involvement with the Society of Garden Designers over the last thirty years has seen his influence on various committees becoming Vice Chairman in 1992 and a Fellow of the Society in 1998.

He has recently joined the adjudication panel judging pre-registered members admissions to full membership

The house is a converted barn from 1911 into a mock Tudor house. The knot gardens either side of the front door help to confirm the history and give the garden and house a sense of place.
The distant bubble is a one-off David Harber Armillary Sphere, bought by the client from the Chelsea Flower Show. It is in fact resting on a rather ugly steel frame, which cannot be seen, as the ground falls away, leaving the perspex top to float.
The client's favourite statue, called Dancers, was placed centre stage, thus helping him to come on board and have the rest of his garden designed by a garden designer.
A Walter Bailey sculpture placed in a woodland wetland garden amongst strong foliage growth of Hosta, Aruncus and ferns.
Late summer border of rudbeckia, Dahlia and Crocosmia - yellow, reds and orange.
Late summer border of Dahlia pinks and reds. The pots were gathered up from around the garden and given some order by being placed in a row.
The end of a more formal herbaceous border, where a relaxed combination of grasses are used before heading off into the meadow.
Long grass and bulbs helps with reducing the mowing and giving greater texture and colour to the garden.
A totally designed natural landscape!
